Services

Could you become a Caring Friend?

The Council's Caring Friends service is looking for volunteers to support unpaid carers across the city.

Unpaid carers play a vital role in supporting family members, friends and loved ones who cannot manage alone due to illness, disability, mental health challenges or age. While caring can be rewarding, it can also be isolating, and a friendly face or regular conversation can make a real difference.

Caring Friends is a volunteer-led befriending service that matches trained volunteers with unpaid carers to provide friendship, companionship and practical support. Volunteers might meet someone for a chat, make regular phone calls, help with shopping or assist with light household or gardening tasks.

Whether you've been a carer yourself or simply want to give something back to your community, volunteering with Caring Friends offers an opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's wellbeing and help them feel more connected.

All volunteers receive training and DBS checks before being matched with a carer.

If you can spare some time and would like to help support unpaid carers in Cardiff, we'd love to hear from you.

How connected is your community? Take part in a nationwide survey

Do you feel a strong sense of belonging where you live? Do neighbors look out for one another? How connected is your local community?

Researchers at the University of Oxford are inviting people across the UK to take part in The National Conversation on Community Cohesion, a major study exploring how people feel about their local area, their community and the United Kingdom.

The survey aims to build a clearer picture of life in communities across the country by looking beyond traditional statistics and asking people directly about their experiences.

While official figures can tell us a lot about an area, they can't capture what it's actually like to live there. The survey will help create one of the few resources that explores how places feel, not just how they are measured.

Participants will be asked about topics including:

  • Sense of belonging in their local area
  • Community connections and relationships
  • Perceptions of unity and division
  • Trust and neighbourliness
  • Views about their local community and the wider UK

The survey is open to anyone living in the UK and takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete. It includes a questionnaire with some interactive elements, along with a small number of demographic questions.

If you'd like to take part, find out more and complete the survey, visit:  National Conversation

Cardiff and Vale Parent Wellbeing Support - Coram Family Lives

What is it?

this is a peer support service for parents and carers whose children are experiencing emotional wellbeing and/or mental health issues. Coram Family Lives recognise that everyone’s experience and situation is unique and the challenges you are facing, as a family unit will be diverse. The common thread, is that parents/ carers of children with emotional and mental health needs often feel overwhelmed in navigating systems, obtaining advice and support to make effective and informed decisions for their children and ensure they are in the best position themselves to support their children.

Coram staff and volunteers support people by offering emotional and practical support, which aims to enable people to regain balance in their life.

Their Peer Supporters have lived experience and have a good understanding of what parents/ carers of children with mental health issues are going through and coping with.

  • Weekly 1:1 support for approximately 6 –8 weeks alongside drop –in groups
  • Phone and online support
  • Signposting to the Coram Family Lives helpline, email and live chat support
  • Free online parenting courses and access to relevant parent training and group sessions
  • Signposting to relevant local support organisations that can provide help and support
  • Online peer support forum where people can engage and connect with each other in a safe space, offer and receive support, share and gain information about coping strategies, local community events and relevant helpful organisations. The online support can be accessed along the individual support sessions and group work

For information about this project and to access this service, please email Charlotte or call 07739 788115.

Family, Advice, support and Protection Hub

If you or someone you know needed help, would you know where to turn?

Cardiff Council works with a wide range of organisations to support babies, children and young people across the city. The council want to make sure that anyone who needs help can access the right support, at the right time, no matter where you turn for assistance.

Cardiff Council know that early support can make a significant difference. That's why they are asking children, young people, parents, carers, professionals and members of the public to share their views on how people access help and what could make it easier to get support when they need it.

The survey will help them better understand:

  • Who people would contact if they were worried about the wellbeing of a baby, child or young person.
  • What barriers might prevent people from seeking help.
  • How we can improve access to information, advice and support services.
  • What changes would make it easier to raise concerns and get support.

Whether you have needed support yourself or not, your views can help shape services for children, young people and families across Cardiff.
